Urine Therapy: Questions and Debates
Urine therapy (Shivambu, Amrita, Amaroli, also called orin therapy or UT) is one of the most argued-about practices in alternative and traditional healing. Here are the questions people fight about most, with what each side says and where to read and watch more.
โ DOES URINE THERAPY WORK?
Practitioners and authors report healing across many conditions, and thousands of personal accounts exist. Mainstream medicine says large controlled trials have not been done. Watch the testimonies and interviews in our video library, including Dr. Group, one of the most active voices on urine therapy today, and decide for yourself.
โ IS THERE ANY SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH ON URINE THERAPY?
Yes, more than most people think. Martha Christy's "Your Own Perfect Medicine" reviews over 50 research reports by doctors and medical scientists, with citations. Modern labs, including Wake Forest, study stem cells collected from urine. See our books and stem cell research pages.
โ IS URINE STERILE?
Urine was long described as sterile. Newer research shows healthy bladders carry small amounts of bacteria. Practitioners use fresh, midstream morning urine.
โ IS URINE THERAPY SAFE?
Many people practise it daily.
โ ISN'T URINE JUST WASTE?
Urine is filtered from blood plasma and contains urea, hormones, vitamins, minerals, enzymes and antibodies. Urea is used in medicine and in expensive skin creams. See our science facts page for the full list.
โ WHERE DOES URINE THERAPY COME FROM?
It is described in the Shivambu Kalpa Vidhi of the Damar Tantra in India, and appears in Chinese, Tibetan, Roman, European and Indigenous traditions. John Armstrong's "The Water of Life" (1944) started the modern revival.
โ STEM CELL HEALING AND URINE?
Researchers can grow stem cells from urine samples, an active area of regenerative medicine. Some practitioners link this to their own experience. Watch our stem cell videos to hear both.
โ WHAT DO DOCTORS SAY?
Most mainstream doctors are sceptical. A growing number of doctors and researchers, such as Dr. Group and Dr. Ryoichi Nakao, speak openly about it. You can watch their interviews below.
