The therapeutic potential of urine

What this video covers

An episode of The Human Upgrade podcast in which host Dave Asprey interviews Darlene Tian, a naturopath and nutritionist who was finishing a PhD study on urine therapy (Shivambu). Asprey says he first drank his urine in the late 1990s and later had urine injected into muscle to calm allergic and inflammatory reactions, and describes a patient of Dr. Klein on Vancouver Island who, he says, lost his severe cat allergy after nine urine injections. Tian explains how she became interested after examining a long-term Shivambu practitioner who appeared very healthy. In her study, participants used 5 ml (one teaspoon) of two-week-old cultured urine rectally, with a needleless syringe, every day for two weeks, plus five minutes of breathing exercises twice a day; she reports that all participants showed less liver inflammation, better oxygenation, better sleep and a calmer mood. She describes looking at aged urine under a microscope and seeing what she calls stem cells enclosing bacteria and sinking as white sediment. The two discuss skin use, aged urine stored in clean glass, nasal rinsing (Tian says it healed her scarred nose), nebulizing, compresses on burns (she says her wife's burn healed in two days without a scar), urine and pharmaceutical drugs, and the emotional side of the practice. Asprey cites published research on urine-derived stem cells for wound healing and on their anti-inflammatory properties.
